Garden Rehab
Domestic
As you can see in this “before” photo, there was little life in the yard to begin with. So much so that we could go months without mowing (even in the summer). Before I started building the garden, I had to bring in several yards of compost to amend the very compacted and clay-heavy soil. This yard sees a lot of runoff during the heavy rains we experience at various times of year and it’s left this space with little topsoil remaining.

In the past two years, I’ve installed four garden beds with an additional three raised beds and two small planted areas around blueberry bushes. There’s now much more life in the yard, including clover filling in formerly bare batches! Below is a video of the main garden bed in April.

In 2018, I received a grant from the county to update and maintain this garden space for a period of six months. It was a great opportunity to connect with people in the community.

During the six-month project, I pruned and thinned plants that had become overgrown. I repaired some of the physical infrastructure including fencing and signage and incorporated new plantings of native perennials.
